My plan which I have had in my head now for over 5 years is to paint the base game from Hero Quest. I have been playing around with Army Painters Quick shades. I'll be just doing a very basic base coated mini's and then hitting them with the Strong Tone Quick Shade. These are the first five test models that I did. So far so good.
This set of 5 has the Sgt with a Power Fist, and 1 of the other Marines with a Plasma Pistol. I am holding off on basing them until once I have most of the army completed, or at least the rest of the squad.

This is the first Squad that has the custom shoulder pads that I made, I think they turned out alright.
I'll be making a post later this week with pictures of the Assault Marines. I have been starting to gather the bits together to build another five or six Assault Marines.
I hope to get the decals on them and play a game or two with them. I also would like to get those damn Tactical Marines Knocked out as well. I really like using the Army Painter War Paints. I have been using Army Painter as my primer / base coat, I have not been able to find a color that matches. I can't wait to start using it, and get my models finished up and touched up so that they all match.
This next set has a medic in the group, so as I am making up special rules I'll have to do something with a medic. I was thinking something like "feel no pain" I'll figure it out when the time comes.

Next 3 models painted

I went with the same green color for the body armor and helmets, however I did use a different color for the fatigues. Using the green should give them a since of cohesion with the other 3.

I put a small dot in the left shoulder of each model

The small green dot on the shoulder gives each the idea that they are part of a specific unit or company. As for painting the models, I like painting them up I can get 3 knocked out in one sitting and still get some progress on my 40K stuff.
I am planning on painting up a small combat squad of Dark Angles to match the single model that I painted for painting contest awhile ago. Nobody puts the Mantis Warriors in the Corner... But me... Those guys have been there for quite some time. I think I might make it a goal to get those guys knocked out.Rath of Unhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10182127995029898822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2957690664902755192.post-12489580330599551562012-05-21T10:30:00.000-07:002012-05-28T17:47:29.413-07:00Defiance GamesI ordered a box set of the the UAMC Marines from Defiance Games. I have painted up the first 3 of 24 that were in the box. I am not sure how I feel about the set, they are nice and easy to put together. The clean up on the models was easy and the assembly was simple. I am planning on using them in a Zombie type lager scale game. I am going to be putting together in October using the "total arse zombie rules".
So the weekend I was able to get the last 10 Ork Boys in the Squad finished, and then I was able to wash each of the 29 Boys and 6 Nobs with Badab Black and seal with a mat finish. The plan is to just get them to a nice table top quality. My Ork Army is going to have as a base 3 troop choices that are going to be maxed out at 30 each. So the means that I'll have to paint at least 90 models. Lucky for my I have some how over the years ended up with close to 5 sets of the Orks from the black reach sets. After looking at the models I finally thought that I should just start painting them up. 35 models later I have 1 Troops Choice and 1/2 an Elite Choice.
I thought I would totally steal this idea from Ron, from the From the Warp Blog. I am looking at this as a way to get a little more motivation for getting stuff painted, and up dating this blog. So two birds with one stone. Right now my biggest project is getting the Orks knocked out. I have 10 left to finish up for the 30 Ork unit in the upper right corner. So here it is the Snap shot and I'll be posting another one next week!Rath of Unhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10182127995029898822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2957690664902755192.post-61704233208489303552012-04-20T13:00:00.026-07:002012-04-20T13:00:00.315-07:00Painting Contest Results

So awhile back I entered my first ever painting contest, I painted a Dark Angel Space Marine. Out of all the entries I didn't place. Oh well I am proud of the effort that I put in and am now painting up a squad to match the mold that I used for the contest. I am planning on starting with just making a 5 man combat squad, so I'll be painting up 3 more tactical marines and 1 Sgt with a power fist.

So it has been now a couple of months since this event. It was the first event that I have ever run and it went pretty well. It was also the first event that Game On the local store here held for 40K. I was hoping that we would have at least 6 players and we ended up have 7 plus me so 8. A better turn out than I thought!

The basic theme of the game was Last Man Standing, so we played to the last model.

The Armies that were present:

Tau (x2)
Space Wolves
Space Marines
Grey Knights
Chaos Daemons
Orks
Dark Eldar

Table Before Terrain

Table After Terrain

As you can see from the second photo there are playing cards on the Table, that was to help with a random deployment, I think for the most part it worked. (Later I heard that two of the players switched there deployments zones) Then we also used the cards to figure out turn order as well.

One of the biggest Epic Moment in mind was when four Tau Fir warriors took down a Dread Knight in assault. The Dread Knight was down to one wound left. and locked in assault with 4 Fire Warriors that didn't break from the last round. The Dread Knight could not hit the broad side of a barn in close combat that last round. All 4 Fire Warriors were able to hit their mark and then were able to wound twice. The Dread Knight was only able to save one of the two wounds. (This is one of the many reasons why I really enjoy this game!)

4 Fire Warriors for the Win!

So we marked the Table with the event

All and all the event was good, Tau was the army to beat this time. It was the other Tau player that ended up winning.
I decided to go with five scouts 4 with Bolters, and the SGT with a Power Fist. I really don't have much of a tactical idea of how to use these guys other than maybe outflanking, and holding objectives.

It is funny how having first turn can make all the difference in the world, how scouts are going to be used. Infiltrate or Reserves... I have had a little success with using them in the role of Infiltrate, scout move and rapid fire. I was able to take and hold an objective from a Tau player for a couple of turns. They focused their attention and I was able move my Assault Marines into Assault and then follow with tactical squads. I ended up with the Big W!

So the plan is to finish basing the last Marine, then wash the squad with Badab Black, and seal them.

A local shop in my town is having a painting contest, the model has to be a Space Marine and you had to buy it from the shop. I like this idea that everyone is starting with the same type of blank canvas to start from. It was a five dollar entry fee and that included the model to be painted.

I decided to go with a Dark Angel Marine, first because I had just finished reading a Space Marine Battle Book that featured the Dark Angels. Second I had a number of extra bits laying around and a number of them were Dark Angel bits at that. Everything kind of fell into place. The cool thing about the contest is that you could add extra bits if you wanted, so I added a skull to the backpack, a Dark Angels shoulder pad, a set of Dark Angel arms with a Bolt Gun (Bolter) and a head with a respirator. I am undecided whether or not to add the Helmet onto the belt of the model.

I am hoping that I win this is the first time I have ever entered a painting contest.
I have just been doing very basic symbols on the pads, crossed arrows for the Assault Squads, Arrows for the Tactical Squads, and Chevrons for the Devastator Squads.

An Example of a Tactical Sgt w/ Laurel to show rank

This afternoon I have been casting shoulder pads like it is going out of style! The resin that I am using is a rather fast acting resin it has a working time of about 90 seconds so I have to move rather quick to get the molds set and ready.

Here are three of the Molds with the Resin in them

The resin only takes about 10 minutes to finish hardening up before it is ready to come out of the Mold. I purchased a kit at the local Hobby Lobby and it came with the everything I needed to make the molds and even the resin. I think if I try to make molds again I'll see if I can get a more flexible rubber for the molds. Each mold makes two shoulder pads.

A Number of the pads cleaned up and waiting to get primed

Some of the shoulder pads had air bubbles so I'll be adding a little green stuff to fill in the gaps. These shoulder pads ar turning out better than I had thought they would. and I think they will give my Tact, Assault, and Dev Squads a unique look to them. I can't wait to get them primed and painted.
That is the standard base for any army in the game. I thought that I would talk what my thought process was when I put together a all Plasma Squad. I say all Plasma because it is a standard tactical squad with ten men in it and I have given the Sgt a Plasma Pistol, one of the tactical Marines a Plasma Rifle, and an other a Plasma Cannon.

Ten Man Tactical Squad

For the Sgt. I went with the Plasma Pistol over the Combi-Plasma Rifle, is because of the assault I want to be-able to have one more Plasma burst before close combat. I feel like the constancy of the 12 inch range and being able to have more than one shot of plasma from the Sgt, is more beneficial to the range of the single shot Combi-Plasma Rifle.

Sgt with Plasma Pistol

Next is the Tactical Marine with the Plasma Rifle, Str 7 AP 2 is not too shabby, having the option to move on still shoot 12 inches is nice also and the rapid fire. I wish that I could field a squad with two special weapons much like the Space Wolves or Chaos Space Marines. I think that the Plasma Rifle is me favorite special weapon that the Tactical squad has to offer. The AP 2 is crucial for tacking down heavy infantry, and the 24 inch range is what makes this my favorite.

Tactical Marine with Plasma Rifle

The final piece to this team is the Tactical Marine with the Heavy Weapon, that heavy weapon is over course the Plasma Cannon, 36 inch range Str 7 AP 2 template! This is heavy infantries worst enemy. The AP2 means invulnerable save if they have them, if it was only str 8 it would also double out most things. Not one to look a gift house in the mouth putting down a AP 2 Template does quite that damage. When it comes to holding the line this is my weapon of choice.

Heavy Weapon Marine (Plasma Cannon)

At 200 points this unit will hold its own in shooting and hold the line fairly well. I like to use this unit as one of my two troop choices nine times out of ten. I enjoy running this troop choice so much that I am currently building another one.
So this is the Medic that is from my Platoon Command Squad, I am using IG arms and Bits with the Wargame Factory's Shock Troop Bodies and Heads. I have built one ten man squad which is painted and and washed. What I have done is to color the eyes different so that I can tell the difference between the command squad (Red) and the other troops (Blue).

This post is to show the difference between a Washed (Badab Black) and an Un-Washed model. The above model has not been washed. I will also be painting the base to look like the others, I'll wash it then they will be finished.
This character is a HQ choice that is on a Space Marine Bike, his chapter tactics all the units in the army gain the scout USR, however only the TROOPS can out flank. Not too bad, but it really didn't make too much sense that he is on a bike. I figure that if I play around with some different builds I'll find a list that works well.
Right now this model is still a work in progress. But here are the photos to date.
I have started a project page that is keeping track of my progress in painting a complete set of the miniatures from the main game system. It is going to be painting all 35 Miniatures. Here are a few that I has painted back in highschool. I'll be stripping them down with simple green, re-priming them and putting new paint on them. I figure I can use these as a comparison later.
This month has been rather slow with the hobby progress, I have been busy and what not. However I was able to get more paint on my Predator Tank for my Emperors Fists army. I magnetized all the weapon options, I was luck when I was look in my bits box I found two extra side sponsons so I was able to use them.
Right now the squad stands at 5, 2 Heavy Bolters, 2 Lascannons, and 1 sgt. The heavy weapons, can be intermixed in with the other Tactical squad, so it gives the army a little more flexibility.

I glad that the Devastator Squad is near completion, now I just need to get the predator tank finished here in the near future. I have a game coming up vs. Orcs and I want to use the auto cannon, and heavy bolter version in that game. I am very close to having that model rapped up as well. (once I am finished with that tank I'll post)

The Sgt not looking to bad

With this squad like the rest of this army, I just did a simple base coat on the model then dry brushed. The blue color for instance I used night sky (darker blue) for the base color, then dry brushed dragon blue (lighter blue). After which I highlight a little, then paint the details. This makes painting go rather quick, and the models turn out looking pretty good.
Right now I am at the point that I need to base and put decals on about nine models to finish them. Plus I have two company commanders pretty much finished up. The one in the Terminator Armor is just waiting for me to put the decal on, the one with the power sword is waiting for me to make up my mind whether to give him a storm bolter or plasma pistol of just a bolt pistol.

I have also put together and painted up another Terminator this one will be the first assault Terminator this one will have a thunder hammer and storm shield. When it is all said and done I'll end up with a total of ten assault five with lighting claws and five with thunder hammers and storm shields. On the power weapons they have a muted purple color to them right now I am going to be dry brushing a blue over the purple and hopefully it will give them a pretty cool effect.
This is the Terminator command unit you can also see that purple color on the lighting claws. I will be painting the skull on the Iron Halo white, and then also adding a gold color to it as well.
This afternoon I decided to pick up my brush and start working on the next Sternguard Vet for my Kill Zone list.

Here is the model primed

As you can see this guy has a number of grenades on him, the cool thing about the Kill Zone rules set is that models can throw their grenades. This will be a little in game reminder for me. It is pretty cool, however with this guy being a Sternguard Vet I will most likely be using the special issue ammo.

Here we are after some paint

I still need to go back and do some touch up painting on the model, but once that is finished and the shoulder pads are painted and glued on this guy will be finished. Oh yeah I also have to paint the back pack as well. I am going to keep the helmet skull theme on all of my Sternguard Vets for this army. It is not too difficult to do.

Better look at the helmet detailing
